Unazuki Yamanoha Review: Onsen, Buffet & Kurobe Gorge Views

Wait—is that the Kurobe Gorge train crossing the bridge right outside the onsen? 🚂˚..。•. My Unazuki Yamanoha review begins with this unforgettable view.

Surrounded by mountains in Unazuki Onsen, Yamanoha is the kind of hotel that makes you slow down before you have even checked in.

I stayed in a spacious gorge-side room, soaked in a panoramic onsen, and faced a buffet so enormous that choosing dinner became an adventure of its own 🤣

Still, the experience was not perfect. The baths can become busy, and choosing the right building and room view matters more than I expected.

In this honest Unazuki Yamanoha review, I will show you exactly what the room, onsen, dinner and breakfast buffets, and access were like—and whether Yamanoha is worth booking for a trip to the Kurobe Gorge Railway.

A Lobby Made for Lingering Over Kurobe Gorge Views

Wooden lattice design framing the Kurobe Gorge view in the Unazuki Yamanoha lobby

Honestly, I expected the lobby to be little more than a place to check in and wait.

Instead, it became one of my favorite places at Unazuki Yamanoha.

The space feels bright, open, and surprisingly stylish for a large onsen hotel. Through the wide windows, the green mountains of the Kurobe Gorge stretch out in front of you, with the red Shin-Yamabiko Bridge adding a beautiful splash of color to the view.

It was the kind of scene that made me stop before even reaching my room and think, “Oh…this hotel might be better than I expected.” 🤣

Cappuccino with a View

One of my small but happiest discoveries was the cappuccino available in the lobby.

Hotel drink stations can be a little disappointing—sometimes there is only regular coffee, or the cappuccino tastes far too sweet. However, I genuinely enjoyed this one.

After the onsen, I would sit with a cappuccino and look out over the gorge. Nothing dramatic was happening. I was simply sitting there, doing absolutely nothing…and somehow, it became one of the moments I remembered most after returning home.

Travel does not always have to mean rushing from one attraction to the next. Sometimes, quietly watching the mountains with a warm drink is the experience.

“The Train Is Coming!”

Then came the fun part.

At certain times, the little Kurobe Gorge Railway train appeared in the distance and crossed the red bridge.

Every time we spotted it, my family suddenly became ridiculously excited.

“The train is coming!” 🚂🤣

We could also see it from our room, but watching it from the lobby—with the gorge spread out beyond the windows—felt different. Even if you are not planning to ride the railway, it is worth checking the train schedule and spending a little time here.

A Quieter Atmosphere at Night

Warm wooden arches and Kurobe Gorge views in the Unazuki Yamanoha lobby at night

The lobby felt even more relaxing later in the evening, when fewer guests were around and the lighting became softer.

My dad read a local newspaper while I studied the names and origins of the fish featured inside—because apparently that is how my family relaxes in Toyama 🤣

With its mountain views, elegant decorations, and peaceful nighttime atmosphere, the lobby was more than somewhere to pass through. It was part of the stay itself—and one of the main reasons Unazuki Yamanoha left a better impression on me than I expected 💖

Our Gorge-Side Room in the Annex: Quiet, Spacious and Perfect for Train-Watching

Kurobe Gorge and the red Shin-Yamabiko Bridge viewed from an Annex room at Unazuki Yamanoha

Then came one of the best surprises of our stay—the view from our room.

My family stayed in a Japanese-Western-style room on the gorge side of the Annex. Unazuki Yamanoha has both a Main Building and an Annex, and for us, choosing the Annex worked out perfectly.

The hallways and elevators around our room felt much quieter than I had expected from such a popular onsen hotel. We rarely crossed paths with other guests, so returning to the room felt peaceful and private.

A Kurobe Gorge Railway View from Our Window

Kurobe Gorge Railway train crossing Shin-Yamabiko Bridge, seen from our Yamanoha guest room

Outside the window, the green mountains of the Kurobe Gorge stretched into the distance, with the bright red Shin-Yamabiko Bridge standing between them.

Then, at certain times, the little trolley train appeared.

“The train is coming!” 🚂🤣

We could see it crossing the bridge from our room in both the evening and the morning. At first, I thought catching a glimpse of it would simply be a nice bonus. Before long, however, I wanted to check the timetable so I would not miss the next one.

Riding the Kurobe Gorge Railway is exciting, but watching the tiny train travel through the mountains from your own room creates a completely different kind of magic.

If this view matters to you, make sure to check for a gorge-side room when booking, as not every room will have the same view.

A Comfortable Japanese-Western Room

Japanese-Western family room at Unazuki Yamanoha with a spacious tatami area

The room combined twin beds with a traditional tatami area, giving us plenty of space to relax.

The beds were positioned near the window, while the tatami area had a low table and floor chairs where we could sit together. For a family trip, having both beds and an open tatami space made the room especially comfortable—and gave us somewhere to spread out our luggage without turning the entire room into chaos 🤣

Everything felt clean, calm, and easy to use.

Two Sinks and Two Toilets—A Family Travel Win

Two separate toilets in our Japanese-Western family room at Unazuki Yamanoha

The most unexpectedly useful feature was having two sinks and two toilets.

Double vanity with two sinks in our Unazuki Yamanoha guest room

This may not sound as exciting as a panoramic gorge view, but anyone who has traveled with family knows exactly how valuable it is 🤣

There was far less waiting while everyone got ready in the morning, which made the room feel even more practical and spacious.

Room layouts and facilities may vary depending on the plan you book. However, our gorge-side Japanese-Western room in the Annex was a wonderful choice for a quiet family stay—with the trolley train as our very cute neighbor outside 💖

Location and Access: Just Minutes from Unazuki Onsen Station

Hot spring fountain outside Unazuki Onsen Station near the Yamanoha hotel

Getting to Unazuki Yamanoha was much easier than I expected.

When we arrived at Unazuki Onsen Station, hot spring water was bubbling dramatically from the fountain outside. It immediately gave me that exciting little feeling of, “We have officially arrived in an onsen town!” 🤣

From there, we walked to the hotel.

A Three-Minute Walk from Unazuki Onsen Station

The hotel is officially around a three-minute walk from Unazuki Onsen Station on the Toyama Chihō Railway.

Even when counting the walk from the ticket gate to the hotel entrance, it felt like only three to five minutes for us. If the weather is pleasant and you are not carrying too much luggage, it is an easy walk.

We had wondered whether we would need transportation to the hotel, but after arriving, our reaction was basically:

“We could have just walked.” 🤣

Travelers with large suitcases or limited mobility may want to check the latest transportation options with the hotel before arrival.

Do Not Confuse the Two Unazuki Stations

This is where international travelers need to be a little careful.

Kurobe-Unazuki Onsen Station is the Hokuriku Shinkansen station. It is not the station beside the hotel.

After leaving the Shinkansen station, walk to the adjacent Shin-Kurobe Station and take the Toyama Chihō Railway to Unazuki Onsen Station.

The station names sound very similar, but they are in different locations—because apparently Japanese train travel needed one tiny puzzle before the onsen 🤣

The hotel is also conveniently located for visiting the Kurobe Gorge Railway. This makes Yamanoha a practical place to stay before or after a trolley train journey through the gorge.

Arriving by Car

According to the hotel, the drive from Kurobe Interchange takes approximately 20 minutes.

The parking area was filled with cars from many different prefectures when we stayed, so Yamanoha clearly attracts travelers from far beyond Toyama.

Whether you arrive by train or car, the location makes it easy to combine an overnight onsen stay with sightseeing around Unazuki and the Kurobe Gorge 💖

The Unazuki Yamanoha Onsen: Scenic Views, Relaxing Aromas and a Busy Hour

Floral arrangement inside Unazuki Yamanoha near the softly scented hallway

Even before I entered the bath, the relaxation had already begun.

Near the entrance to the changing area, I noticed a soft, calming aroma drifting through the air. It seemed to include lavender, although I cannot say exactly what the blend was.

The scent was not strong or overwhelming. It was simply there for a moment as I walked past—just enough to make my shoulders relax before the onsen.

Beautiful rooms and meals are easy to photograph, but scent is different. It does not appear in your travel photos, yet somehow it stays in your memory.

That gentle aroma was one of the small details that made Yamanoha feel more thoughtfully designed than I had expected.

Is the Onsen Crowded?

Yes—depending on the time.

Unazuki Yamanoha is a popular hotel, and the onsen was generally lively during our stay. The busiest time I experienced was in the late afternoon before dinner.

It makes sense. Guests check in, settle into their rooms, and then everyone has the same brilliant idea:

“Let’s go to the onsen before dinner!” 🤣

Yukata and woven onsen baskets provided in our Unazuki Yamanoha room

The changing area became busy, and many guests were washing and drying their hair. I remember around ten hair dryers being available, but even then, I had to wait briefly for one.

However, the crowd did not remain at the same level for the entire evening. After one large wave of guests passed through, the area suddenly became calmer.

If you prefer a quieter experience, try avoiding the main pre-dinner rush rather than expecting the bath to be completely empty.

Watching the Trolley Train from the Onsen

During my stay, the women’s bath faced the gorge until the evening.

This meant that, with the right timing, we could see the Kurobe Gorge Railway train from the onsen.

Finding the little train while soaking in the hot spring was such an unexpected moment.

“Wait…can we really see the trolley train from here?” 🚂🤣

The baths switched between men and women the following morning, so the view was different when I returned.

Bath assignments and switching times may change. If seeing the train from the onsen is important to you, check the latest schedule and bath information after arrival.

The onsen may become busy, but soaking while looking out toward the Kurobe Gorge made it one of the most memorable parts of our stay 💖

The Unazuki Yamanoha Buffet: Dinner, Breakfast and My Honest Verdict

My light dinner selection from the Unazuki Yamanoha buffet at restaurant Seeds

Both dinner and breakfast at Unazuki Yamanoha were served buffet-style at the hotel restaurant, Seeds.

Let me be honest from the beginning: I personally prefer kaiseki meals.

Not because I eat less—the photographic evidence from breakfast will immediately destroy that theory 🤣

I simply love the quiet atmosphere, beautiful presentation, and excitement of receiving one carefully prepared dish at a time.

A buffet creates a completely different experience. Instead of slowly admiring each course, my curiosity takes control.

“This looks interesting.”
“I should try that too.”
“Oh no, my plate is already full.” 🤣

Reserve Your Dinner Time Soon After Check-In

During our stay, guests selected their preferred dinner time using a smartphone after check-in.

Rather than receiving a fixed time at the front desk, we accessed the reservation form and chose from the remaining time slots ourselves.

By the time we made our reservation, some of the later slots were already close to full.

It is tempting to reach your room, drop your luggage, and immediately begin relaxing. However, if you have a preferred dinner time, I recommend making the reservation before becoming too comfortable 🤣

The reservation system may change, so check the latest instructions when you arrive.

Dinner: Plenty of Choice for the Whole Family

Entrance sign for Seeds, the buffet restaurant at Unazuki Yamanoha

The dinner buffet included a wide selection of Japanese and Western dishes, including sushi and sashimi.

My honest impression was that the experience focused more on variety and quantity than on serving each ingredient as a refined gourmet dish.

The restaurant was lively rather than intimate, and the overall atmosphere initially reminded me a little of a food court.

That does not necessarily make it a negative experience—especially for families.

My dad could choose exactly what he wanted, my mom could explore the desserts, and I could continue collecting anything that caught my attention until our table looked like a small festival 🤣

The staff also cleared used plates regularly, which helped the table remain comfortable even when the restaurant was busy.

I had already eaten a generous kaiseki lunch in Uozu earlier that day, so this was me “holding back” at dinner.

Apparently, my version of a light meal still looks completely normal.

Desserts—and the Dangerous Soft-Serve Machine

My mom particularly enjoyed the dessert selection.

I also found coffee jelly and a soft-serve ice cream machine, which is always a dangerous combination for me.

Whenever I see both, I suddenly need to place a little soft serve on top of the coffee jelly. I do not need an enormous portion. I simply need that tiny swirl 🤣

This is the fun of a buffet: even when you are already full, curiosity somehow convinces you to walk through the dessert section one more time.

Breakfast: A Long Line That Moved Surprisingly Fast

My full Japanese breakfast selection at the Unazuki Yamanoha buffet

The following morning, a considerable line had already formed before the restaurant opened.

At first, I thought we might be waiting for a long time. Once the doors opened, however, the line moved more smoothly than its appearance suggested.

If you have an early trolley train or sightseeing plan, I would still allow a little extra time. Preparing your luggage the night before will also make the morning much easier.

The highlight of breakfast for me was the freshly grilled sea bream collar.

When a new batch appeared, it disappeared quickly—and I understood why. A good piece of grilled fish in the morning immediately makes you feel that you are staying at a Japanese onsen hotel.

I was also happy to find multigrain rice. Somehow, choosing multigrain rice makes me feel wonderfully healthy, even when the rest of my tray says otherwise 🤣

There was golden kiwi too, although the one I tried was less sweet than I had hoped. My excitement became very quiet after the first bite.

And then there was my breakfast tray.

This was not styled for a beautiful blog photograph. It was the actual breakfast I ate—one person, one tray, and apparently enough curiosity for several people 🤣

Who Will Enjoy the Buffet Most?

The Unazuki Yamanoha buffet is a good match for families, travelers with different food preferences, and anyone who enjoys choosing from many dishes in a casual atmosphere.

However, if your ideal onsen stay includes a quiet dining room and an elegant multi-course kaiseki dinner, your preference may be different from mine.

For me, the buffet was more about having fun together than discovering exceptional gourmet cuisine.

And despite claiming to be a devoted kaiseki person, I still returned to the table with an impressive amount of food—so clearly, I enjoyed the adventure 💖

Yamanoha vs. Entaijiso: Which Unazuki Onsen Hotel Would I Choose?

Holding a whole crab served at Entaijiso during a previous Unazuki Onsen stay

Unazuki Yamanoha is not the only hotel my family has tried in Unazuki Onsen.

On a previous trip, we stayed at Entaijiso, where we booked a dinner plan that included an entire crab.

Naturally, seeing a whole crab arrive at the table made us very happy 🦀🤣

We enjoyed that stay, and my parents have said they would happily return to Entaijiso if Yamanoha were unavailable. It can be a good option for travelers looking for a reasonably priced stay with an onsen in Unazuki.

However, if I were personally choosing between the two hotels again, I would book Yamanoha.

Why I Would Return to Yamanoha

I tend to notice the small details that make a hotel feel special.

The atmosphere when I first enter the lobby.
The cleanliness and comfort of the room.
The scent drifting through the hallways.
The view waiting outside the window.

Those details create a little feeling of excitement—and that feeling matters to me more than simply having somewhere to sleep.

In my memory, Entaijiso felt like a comfortable place to enjoy an onsen and spend the night.

Yamanoha felt like a hotel where the time spent inside became part of the trip itself.

I enjoyed sitting in the lobby with a cappuccino, watching the trolley train cross the red bridge, returning to our quiet gorge-side room, and noticing the relaxing aroma near the onsen.

None of these moments was particularly dramatic. Together, however, they made me think:

“I actually really like this hotel.” 🤣💖

My Personal Choice

This comparison is entirely based on my own preferences.

Travelers who prioritize a traditional dinner plan, a lower price, or simply a convenient place to stay may feel differently. Room types, meal plans, and prices also vary by date.

However, if you want your hotel to offer more than a bed and an onsen—and you enjoy stylish spaces, scenic views, and small moments of delight—Yamanoha may be the better match.

Who Is Unazuki Yamanoha Best For?

Tatami seating area with a low table in our spacious Yamanoha family room

Unazuki Yamanoha is a great choice for travelers who want to enjoy the time spent at their hotel—not simply use it as somewhere to sleep.

The hotel is especially memorable if the Kurobe Gorge Railway is part of your trip.

We spotted the trolley train from our room, the lobby, and even the onsen during the right hours. Every appearance created another small “The train is coming!” moment for my family 🚂🤣

Families and Multi-Generational Trips

Yamanoha worked particularly well for our family trip.

The buffet allowed everyone to choose what they wanted, while our spacious Japanese-Western room gave us plenty of room to relax together.

Having two sinks and two toilets was also surprisingly helpful when everyone was getting ready at the same time.

Families with children may enjoy the casual buffet and the excitement of watching the trolley train. Adult family groups, like mine, can appreciate those things just as enthusiastically 🤣

Travelers Who Prefer a Modern Onsen Hotel

Yamanoha may also appeal to travelers who want an onsen experience without staying in a very traditional or old-fashioned ryokan.

The bright lobby, stylish decorations, clean room, calming aromas, and large windows gave the hotel a more modern feeling than I expected.

It could work especially well for couples, groups of friends, and first-time onsen visitors who want a comfortable introduction to this part of Japanese travel culture.

Who May Prefer Another Hotel?

Yamanoha may not be the perfect match for everyone.

If your ideal onsen stay means eating a quiet, elegant kaiseki dinner or soaking in an almost empty bath, you may prefer a smaller ryokan.

Because Yamanoha is popular, the onsen and buffet restaurant can become lively during peak hours.

However, if you enjoy scenic views, a relaxed family atmosphere, plenty of food choices, and little moments of excitement throughout your stay, Yamanoha is easy to enjoy.

It is the kind of hotel where you may arrive for the onsen—but return home remembering the cappuccino, the fragrance in the hallway, and the tiny red train crossing the gorge 💖

And one little piece of artwork at the hotel caught my eye, too ♡

Unazuki Yamanoha Review: Is It Worth Staying Here?

Unazuki Yamanoha review – cappuccino with a Kurobe Gorge view from the hotel lobby

Before this trip, I had no plan to write an Unazuki Yamanoha review.

I took photographs casually, simply enjoying a family holiday without thinking about turning every moment into an article.

But after returning home, I kept remembering the hotel.

The Kurobe Gorge view I watched with a cappuccino in the lobby.
The trolley train crossing the red bridge outside our room.
The relaxing fragrance near the onsen.
And my entire family looking toward the window every time someone announced, “The train is coming!” 🚂🤣

Eventually, I realized this was a hotel I genuinely wanted to share.

What I Loved Most

Yamanoha is not memorable because of one enormous luxury feature.

Instead, it was the combination of small experiences: a quiet gorge-side room, a bright and stylish lobby, scenic baths, thoughtful details, and plenty of moments when the hotel itself became part of our trip.

Our Japanese-Western room in the Annex was particularly comfortable for a family stay, and the location near Unazuki Onsen Station made exploring the area easy.

What to Know Before Booking

The hotel is popular, so the onsen and buffet restaurant can become busy at peak times.

The buffet focuses more on variety and casual family fun than on a quiet gourmet experience. As someone who personally prefers beautifully presented kaiseki meals, this was the part of the stay where my preferences were slightly different.

Choosing the right room also matters. If you are dreaming of seeing the gorge and trolley train from your window, look carefully for a gorge-side room when booking.

Would I Stay Again?

Yes.

If I return to Unazuki Onsen, Yamanoha will be one of my first choices.

It is especially worth considering for families, first-time visitors to the area, and travelers planning to ride the Kurobe Gorge Railway.

I arrived expecting a comfortable onsen hotel.

I left with the feeling that Yamanoha had given us something more—a collection of small, happy memories that continued to make me smile after the journey ended.

And sometimes, that is the best kind of hotel stay 💖
